The Long Cottage was originally stabling for the Holkham Hall estate until 1872 when it was converted into two semi-detached cottages. At the start of the nineteenth century it was purchased by Edward VII as it bordered the Sandringham estate and it's rumoured that his desire was because the grey partridge shooting was better! In the 1970s the house was bought from the Queen's estate by the local MP who extended it and converted it into one private dwelling.

Floorplan

Village

This beautiful area is best known for the location of Sandringham House the royal holiday home. The stunning house is perhaps the most famous stately home in Norfolk and sits at the heart of the 20,000-acre Sandringham Estate. The beautiful gardens around the house extend to 60 acres. In spring there are displays of rhododendrons and magnolias as well as havens for bees and butterflies in the summer. Surrounding the house and gardens are the 600 acres of heath and woodland of the superb Country Park, which is open to the public daily.

There is plenty to do on a trip to Sandringham - you will need at least four hours to explore the house alone.  Walk on one of the trails, enjoy a picnic, visit the Adventure Play Area or maybe enjoy an ice cream or lunch in the Sandringham Cafe and Coffee Shop. The Estate also has an Exhibition and Transport Museum which holds an amazing collection from the very first Royal car to the 1939 Merryweather fire engine.

History

Sandringham village is the birthplace of Diana Princess of Wales.

The parish church of St Mary Magdalene, Sandringham, is considered to be one of the finest carrstone buildings in existence and dates back in its present form to the 16th century. A country church of exceptional historic interest, with memorials to many members and relations of the Royal Family from Queen Victoria onwards. It is used regularly as a place of worship by the Royal Family, which normally includes Christmas.

Visit

Sandringham is conveniently situated close to the west and north Norfolk Coast. There are many beaches to explore and the west coast beaches are known for brilliant sunsets, making for a really memorable evening. Brancaster beach is superb for relaxing beach days with the family. Walk along the beach and seals can often be spotted bobbing in the inlet.

Much of this area is also an Area of Outstanding Beauty and many conservation areas teeming with birds and wildlife from RSPB Titchwell, Snettisham Nature Reserve and Holme NWT to name a few. Alternatively pop on your walking boots or bicycle as there are many routes, including the National Cycle Route, Peddars Way and Norfolk Coastal Path.

For something delicious to eat visit the Rose and Crown in Snettisham, a local gem which also boast the Norfolk Pub of the year award and just 3 miles away Thornham has some great delis and farm shops.

Lovely cottage in peaceful area and made a great location for the Sandringham Game Fair. We have stayed in many cottages over the years in and around the surrounding area and this cottage was most definitely one of the best! Many thanks.
Stay Highlights: All guests were able to have own bedroom (couple shared one bedroom); Garden secure for dog front and back; Large kitchen for sociable dining, well stocked; Property all on one level (attic not used) and not a carpet in sight.

We have had a very enjoyable week in The Long Cottage, 4 adults and 4 children. The 3 girls were very happy in their upstairs bedroom and were excited to discover a cat with 4 kittens living in the back garden! We have visited many of the local attractions with the children, Hunstanton, Heacham, Sandringham, etc.

We had a wonderful stay with our family, 9 of us, not counting the dogs. Most of us here hadn't been to Norfolk before, such a contrast from the shropshire hills. We loved the Sandringham Easter trail and the house. Cromer for the seaside town and fish and chips. The seals at Hosey Beach. the house was just right for us all, lots of room, comfy chairs and beds and beautiful simple garden.

Stayed at The Long Cottage this weekend with a big group of friends and had a fabulous time. Great kitchen for socialising in and a big table to eat round. Went for lovely beach walks and slept well (like logs!) in the comfy beds. Even saw the "shooting star" which was a bonus!

Lisa & co, 24th of March 2023

My family and I had a lovely stay at Long Cottage in Flitcham. The cottage is cosy, welcoming and extremely well presented. The kitchen is large and allows you to cook easily for all the guests. There is plenty of space, many bathrooms and a separate T.V room for the kids. The kids were also big fans of their room. Overall we were huge fans, and will be returning!.
