FAQs

Here are the answers to some of our frequently asked questions. If you still can’t find the information you need, please contact our team and we will be happy to help.

Payments via credit or debit cards are accepted (excluding American Express.) Alternatively payments may be made by bank transfer or by cheque.

We need to check with some of our owners prior to accepting a booking and so your booking is provisional and no payment is taken from your card until it is authorised by us, with your card details registered only. Once payment has been taken via the secure payment gateway, we will send a confirmation of your booking via email.

Our check-in time is 4pm and departure time is 10am. Please make sure you don’t arrive earlier or leave later than this as it’s vital the housekeeping teams have enough time to make sure all is ready. Please call us on the day if you would like to request a different check in or check out time as we may be able to accommodate your request.

Most weekly bookings start on Fridays with a small selection of cottages on Saturdays. Our short breaks are typically Friday to Monday or Monday to Friday. In low season we can be more flexible with start dates so please ask us and we will see if we can help.

Our properties are all owned by different owners, so once the booking is confirmed it’s not possible to change to another property without losing the deposit paid.

If you would like to change the dates booked then we will contact the owner of that property and depending on the notice given, we may be able to move the dates. Please note that this is not guaranteed and will depend upon individual circumstances.

We ask our owners to provide all the basic cooking equipment you’re likely to need and essentials including tea, coffee, sugar, salt and pepper. Cleaning materials are provided and loo rolls, hand wash, kitchen roll, dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid (detergent for washing machines is not provided).

All beds will be made-up with sheets and duvets, with a hand towel and bath towel supplied per person and bath mats in each bath/shower room. Beach towels are not provided, so please do not take the towels provided out of the house, but bring your own if anticipating a dip in the North Sea! Bedding and soft mattresses are not supplied for cots or travel cots, so please bring your own. Tea towels and oven gloves will also be provided.

If there’s an open fire or wood-burner in your cottage then sufficient wood and kindling will be provided for your first fire (between October – April) and you may need to purchase additional firewood locally. If storage space permits and unlimited firewood is provided, this will be mentioned in our website details.

If there’s anything specific you would like to ask about, please contact us.

Cars may only be charged if there is an EV charging point fitted at the property. The cost of electricity is NOT included in the rental price and Sowerbys Holiday Cottages must be notified if the charger is used and an additional surcharge will be made to recompense the owner.

Due to insurance purposes, guests must never charge their car using a standard outdoor plug or an extension cable linking to a domestic plug. This is not permitted because of fire regulations regarding wiring, earthing rods and voltage restrictions; it poses a serious fire risk to standard 13 amp sockets and there is a real danger that the body of the vehicle could become live.

Please call our Burnham Market office on 01328 730880 and we will endeavour to resolve the issue for you. Outside office hours a mobile number will be left on our office answer phone for emergencies 24/7 that require attention

There is a key-safe located at most of our cottages and once booked we will provide you with directions and the code, giving you complete flexibility to arrive and leave when you wish (within the specified arrival and departure windows).

We recommend that you have some form of travel insurance to cover you in the event that you need to cancel your holiday booked with us. We offer refund protection through XCover which gives you the opportunity to add protection during the booking process which then enables you to request a full refund from XCover should you, or anyone in your party, be unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances. Our booking terms and conditions include details of our cancellation policy.

For all Sowerbys Holiday Cottages a security/breakages deposit is required to be held at the time of final payment (by debit/credit card authorisation or by cheque). This is £250 for most of our properties, but some require a larger security deposit which is specified in the property description on our website. Please note that the security deposit will not be taken from pre-authorised cards unless there is a problem found in the cottage after departure and you will be contacted prior to any charges being made.

No it is not permitted to exceed the maximum occupancy stated on the website for each cottage, unless prior agreement is given, as this can invalidate owner’s property insurance. You must not hold events at the cottage and we ask that you are considerate towards occupants of neighbouring properties.

Not without permission from Sowerbys Holiday Cottages and the owner. Please ask us if this is something you’d like to do.

Not all of our cottages have travel cots or highchairs provided (due to lack of storage space) so please check the website to see if your cottage does. We do have a hire and delivery service, please let us know if you wish to add the hire for items to your booking. All travels cots are supplied with a standard mattress, however please remember to bring your own cot bedding and an additional soft mattress if desired.

The majority of our cottages will accept well-behaved dogs, however please check our website where it’s clearly indicated for each individual property whether dogs are permitted. A minimum charge of £30 per dog per week (or short stay) is made.

If you bring a dog with you, please note that dogs are not allowed upstairs or in bedrooms and we ask that they are not left alone in the cottage

NO – smoking or vaping is strictly forbidden inside any of our properties.
