Floorplan
Beach
With its big blue skies and sandy beach, Wells award-winning beach is a popular family destination about a mile from the quay. It's well known for its long stretch of sand, iconic row of beach huts, sand dunes and pine woods.
Village
It's a delightful unspoilt historic town on the North Norfolk Coast with a jumble of old buildings and lanes still existing from its heritage as a port and former maltings industry. The picturesque quay and waterfront is still very much a working port with fishing boats still berthed in this small harbour and stalls selling locally caught shrimps, crabs and whelks. A popular place with sailors with many sailing and leisure craft here and local sailing tuition available. A distinctive landmark on the quay is the granary building with its overhanging gantry. Children enjoy the facilities round the quay and the challenge of crabbing (gillying) from the steep harbour wall.
The main shopping area of Wells is Staithe Street, a narrow, mostly pedestrianised lane with surviving Victorian and Edwardian shop fronts, that runs from the water's edge right up to the top part of town. In the centre of the town is The Buttlands which is a large rectangular green lined with Georgian and late Victorian houses, which used to be used for archery practise in mediaeval days. Now it is home to the excellent Crown hotel and restaurant which is run by Kiwi celebrity chef Chris Coubrough, as well as the popular The Globe Inn.
The quay has become one of the North Norfolk’s most popular and well-loved seaside destinations with a great selection of shops, galleries and places to eat, including the award winning French's fish & chips.
History
The name derives from the spring water which rises up through the chalk area. Guella is the name given in the doomsday book and later derived from Wella meaning spring. The supply of corn and grain was the main trade for the town of Wells, its seaport dates back to the fourteenth century. Wells was also known for the supply of malt, the town boasted to have up to twelve maltings and in 1750 this equated to a third of the exports of malt from the country. Wells port widely relies on the tides to gain access to the harbour as there is not a river running through it. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries its mariners were the first to bring herring and cod in large quantities from Iceland.
Visit
Only a couple of miles away along the coast road is Holkham Hall with its impressive 18th century Palladian architecture and 3,000 acre deer park. This is a must visit location for all the family with many lovely events taking place at Holkham throughout the year. There is also a nature reserve in and around the Holkham which includes all manner of wildlife habitats, flora and fauna. You can visit the Lookout for panoramic views whilst enjoying a cuppa located at the top of Lady Anne’s Drive. The beach at Holkham is absolutely beautiful and has often been used as the location for many films and music videos including ‘Shakespeare in Love’ and ‘The Duchess’. You will often see families with their four-legged friend or even weekend horse riders, or if you are lucky the Household Cavalry at the beach.

Lovely house, very well equipped and excellent fire safety measures. Fantastic showers, comfy beds and perfect situation in Wells. Beach and sun, great meal at White Horse, The Globe and Crab House. Amazing Anthony Gormley installation at Houghton Hall, and exquisite walled garden, quite a nice lunch too.

A very comfortable cottage which we have stayed in several times before. Wells beach on what was like a summer day, Holkham bird hide at dusk with Pink-foots and Marsh Harriers (no Barn Owl this year). Coffee in town and fish and chips.
Beautiful, well equipped cottage with added bonus of parking on site.Have stayed in Wells for many years and it never disappoints. Very helpful when the heating was not working, caretaker out within 20 mins
Cottage looked lovely. The milk and cake were very much appreciated. We like the little extra room which was beautifully sunny at times
Fabulous cottage. Really has been home from home. Couldn't have asked for anything more. Location perfect for our first stay in Wells. We will definitely be back.
Spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The perfect holiday cottage! Will definitely recommend to others.

Wonderful cottage. Great location. Thank you for a wonderful week.
We’d not stayed in that part of wells before but it was lovely. The cottage was welcoming and warm with everything we needed. Great location, great amenities, lovely touches (cake, games, etc)
Seal Cottage was comfortable, spacious and centrally situated. We cannot fault it. this was our second visit to the property and would return. There is no garden at this property but the patio was nicely equipped with table and chairs. And there is the bonus of a parking space.
Lovely cottage, bathrooms etc like, or were, new. We had a great time, thank you. I would definitely use your services again, faultless !
Seal Cottage was better than expected, location is excellent, quiet but very close to the town centre. A great week. Thanks.
We made a really good choice with Seal Cottage, we’ve been very happy and comfy here. The sun has shone every day, with the last one being really hot too!! The cottage is very well equipped and tastefully decorated. Excellent shower(s), beautiful curtains and towels (which actually “wrap around” nicely). Plenty of real ales available, but the Crown and the Globe most expensive. Give the Lifeboat a try – quirky (closed Monday). Edinburgh okay too – a visit to Crabbies crab shop, at Salthouse recommended: good value “platefuls” – lots of choice. We’ve seen thousands of pink-footed geese, even flying over the cottage. Thank you for our cake too – it was very welcome with a cuppa after a long walk.
P.S. We’ve donated a washing up rack for when there’s only a bits to wash!!
We liked Seal Cottage as it had attention to detail - a range of kitchen equipment, comfy furnishings and excellent showers. We had lovely sunny weather, so was able to sit in the garden early in the morning with a cup of coffee!
Had a lovely time here. Beautifully clean and well appointed. The cake was most welcome! Thank you.
Third year here and just as pleased, nothing to fault but the weather, hope to be back next year.
Seal Cottage was better than expected, spacious and comfortable, 10 out of 10 for cleanliness. We had a nice relaxing holiday and the cottage certainly was an important part of that!
Better than expected, very spacious living accommodation with no short-cuts taken by owners in terms of provisions. The cake & wine were the icing!! 10 out of 10 for the cleanliness, it was all spotless! lovely property and we would definitely return
Great cottage, Great location, very clean and well equipped.
This is a beautiful cottage refurbished to a high standard and well stocked with all the basics you could need, add to that the close proximity to the town and quayside.
Thank you - lovely cottage in lovely Wells.
Loved it - Thanks so much.
Lovely cottage- super nicely renovated and clean. Worked very well for our family.
Close to everything we needed, but far enough off the harbour to be quiet and peaceful.
A lovely week once again in this warm, cosy, well equipped cottage. Thank you for the milk, bread and butter on arrival - so practical to arrive to when turning up late with hungry kids. We will be back. Many Thanks.
Another great weekend away, thank you for letting us stay in your lovely home. Chocolate Deli was as good as ever and the walk along the beach was as windy as ever. See you next year!

I had so much fun making chocolates at the Walsingham Deli and going to Norwich was great. The beds are the most comfortable in the world.
Thank you for a very enjoyable stay in this comfy cottage. A great base for a Christmas shopping weekend. Loads of nice places to eat out. Also appreciated the speedy response to our light bulb issues!
Another enjoyable stay here. We really appreciated the loaf of bread and milk left for us so we celebrated with a slice of toast and a cup of tea. Never seen such a well equipped holiday cottage. Really comfortable twin beds. We engaged in our usual activities: pumpkin trail in the walled garden on the Holkham Estate, a meal on the Albertros on the sloping deck - all part of the fun.
A really lovely stay - Well equipped, clean and comfy beds - We will come back. Great meals out and in the cottage too, thank you We loved the Albratros - such fun and different to anywhere we've ever been!
