Syderstone

Location

The unspoilt village of Syderstone dates back well over a thousand years. The original Anglo Saxon name was Sidsterne, which is thought to mean large estate from the Old English sidï meaning broad or extensive and sterne meaning property.
The church of St Mary, one of Norfolk's round tower churches, was originally an early medieval cruciform church, with aisles and transepts, but has since altered to its present form of west tower, nave and chancel. The chancel contains some outstanding curvilinear tracery windows.

It is also home to Syderstone Common which is a wonderful area of grass heath, punctuated with ephemeral ponds, and surrounded by secondary woodland. The site is excellent for reptiles and amphibians, with seven species recorded. Woodlark occasionally breed, and other notable breeding birds include lesser whitethroat.
