Harbour/Beach
A picturesque fishing and sailing harbour with multiple winding tidal creeks and salt marshes stretching from the harbour side and leading to sand dunes: the biggest known as Gun Hill. From Burnham Overy Staithe you can take a scenic walk to Gun Hill which takes about half an hour. In the summer there is lovely wildlife to be spotted including wading birds and beautiful butterflies. A gap in the dunes, locally known as Burnham Harbour, opens up and there are miles of golden sandy beaches stretching out towards Holkham and Wells to be admired. During the summer there is a ferry out to the nature reserve of Scolt Head Island which is a lovely trip for bird watchers and seal spotters.
Village
An area of outstanding natural beauty, the village is a large hamlet and a great destination for your stay. The views across the harbour are lovely whatever time of year you decide to visit. There is a great little gastro pub in the centre of the village called The Hero (in honour of Admiral Lord Nelson) which has a great menu of tasty dishes. Also, in the centre of the village there is a large playing field with hard tennis courts and basketball area and a children’s playground. Just outside the village is the noticeable landmark of the stunning six-storey Burnham Overy Windmill and neighbouring watermill, although neither are open to the public, they stand proud on the edge of the village, a beautiful sight when the sun catches the sails against Norfolk's big blue skies. In June Burnham Overy Staithe hosts the popular Norfolk Superhero Challenge, a quadraphonic event where teams of 2 work together to swim, kayak, cycle and run across the beaches and through the creeks. A lovely charity event to spectate. To pop to one of the other coastal villages you can catch the Coasthopper Bus which runs along the coast through many of the delightful villages and seaside towns - a great green way to explore the coast and without the worry of where to park!
History
Part of Burnham Overy was the original port for The Burnhams and set on the river Burn. Trading ships once reached the village by the river until the end of the Middle Ages when the river silted up and along with it the commercial trade. Until the end of the First World War the trading ships used the Staithe. This made a distinction between the two villages Burnham Overy Town and Burnham Overy Staithe that exist a mile apart from one another today. The most notable resident of Burnham Overy Staithe is Richard Woodget who resided at one of our cottages Flagstaff East/West and was the captain of the Cutty Sark. Horatio, Admiral Lord Nelson according to letters learned to row and sail a dinghy at Burnham Overy Staithe at the age of 10 just two years before joining the Navy.
Visit
A great central location on the north Norfolk Coast right on the coastal path ideal for popping on your walking books and walking for about 30 minutes to reach the glorious wide open beach. If you are looking for family days out there are the beaches of Wells and Brancaster where you can park nearby and reach the beaches within a few steps.

Clean and comfortable, lovely garden especially if dog in group, south facing patio, local pub excellent and a short walk to the staithe. Ideal for bird watching and walks. Will be back again. Weather glorious and long walks on Holkham beach.
A lovely bungalow in a perfect location. Many thanks. Very comfortable accommodation and well equipped. Excellent location.
This little bungalow is in a great location for exploring Norfolk. The welcome goodies were much appreciated. The garden is very pretty and well looked after. The property was lovely and warm.
After a difficult journey it was a relief to arrive at the haven that is Little Tern. The property is warm and comfortable. The garden is secure for the dogs and we enjoyed sitting outside in the sunshine. Little Tern is within easy distance of the wonderful walks at Burnham Overy Staithe. Great walks in warm sunshine with lots of wildlife to see. Skeins of geese coming in.
As usual everything we needed and beds very comfortable. Little Tern my favourite cottage hope to return again soon. Long walks to the beach and pub lunches, even though the weather was not very good ! Great location especially for dog owners and good parking.
As lovely as always. Thanks for the oven gloves! The beds were most comfortable and the property a delight to stay in.The location is perfect for walking the coastal path and sight seeing plus birds.Titchwell visit. The Duck Inn. Walking along the beaches. The whole experience has been a delight and Sowerbys most helpful.
Fabulous stay as always, great accommodation in a beautiful location full of wildlife.Plenty of walks to be out in nature to enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife
We have had a very enjoyable week at Little Tern. The property was very comfortable, and the garden was ideal for the dog. The location was wonderfully quiet, and with dark skies at night - we saw the Milky Way for the first time in years! The location was only a few hundred yards from the pub and the harbour. We will be coming back next year!
Excellent location with a great garden for the dog. Cottage has everything you need. Walking on the staithe down to the beach and pine woods.
Another enjoyable week in this lovely little bungalow. It feels a real home from home and so close to the coastal path. We're already booked for next year. Clean and comfortable and well furnished- we recommend it.
An excellent comfortable, clean and well equipped property. Could not have wanted anything better. Also ideal for my little dog. Property ideally positioned for exploring north east Norfolk and further afield.
Stayed a few times here, it never disappoints home from home. Long walks on Holkham Beach and lovely pub lunches.
We have already booked again for next year, think this says it all!!
The bungalow is situated in a quiet location in this lovely village with a short walk down to the quay and the coastal path. We thought that the property was well proportioned and decorated with pleasant gardens front and rear. From the property there was easy access to the North Norfolk coast and with our limited walking ability we were able to easily access the quay with beautiful views over the estuary. The Hero pub is close by where we enjoyed a good meal.
Absolutely brilliant cottage and fantastic location. This was our twelfth stay here and as usual, everything was excellent: clean and well stocked cottage, much appreciated edible goodies left for us to enjoy as a welcome on arrival, quiet and peaceful area full of wildlife and very near the sea. We cycled for miles and swam in the ocean every day, alongside curious seals and all the seabirds dipping and diving for tiny silver fish. The weather was perfect and the only time it rained was either in the middle of the night or once, briefly, when we were deep in the Holkham woods, well sheltered from the showers. This cottage is a home-from-home for our family and we'll keep returning for a refreshing and revitalising break. Thanks very much Sowerbys (and cottage owners) for another amazing holiday! Lovely clean cottage with all equipment needed for a very comfortable stay. Top notch location right near the sea and coastal path, Holkham Estate, Wells next the Sea and tons of cycling routes for our active family. Perfect sea swimming - and make you wonder why anyone needs to go abroad when there's the Staithe and Holkham Beach on the doorstep! So peaceful and tranquil, away from busy working lives. We wish we owned the place but will keep returning again and again!
Our third visit to Little Tern. You can see we like this holiday retreat. Beach walks, trips on the ferry, good eating out at local restaurants.

A great location for walking and bird watching.
Every afternoon after returning from visiting local places , it was great to walk along the sea defence banks watching the bird life. Plenty to see.
Little Tern is a cosy bungalow perfect for a winter break. We really appreciated that it had been decorated for Christmas. The heating made it very cosy and in a convenient location for popping out to the local pub for dinner

Location is perfect. Layout and decor are excellent, providing just the right amount of space for our family and with similar decorative taste to our own. Location is brilliant because it's peaceful and further away from the main road or harbour yet within a few minutes walk of the sea. Beds are very comfortable, Property is clean and tidy. Fridge is now the right size - a larger one than used to be here. It feels like a home from home and we've stayed here 8 times in the last 5 years and will be back again. - Many thanks to Sowerbys for making the whole booking process efficient and easy, as usual and for enabling us to have yet another fantastic holiday!
