Village

The attractive village of South Creake (twinned with North Creake) has a lovely village green at its heart with the river Burn that runs through. When visiting the village, you will see the much-loved resident ducks crossing the road from the houses for a swim on the river. There is a lovely leafy recreation ground, park and village hall making it the hub of the village. You will often see local produce such as cakes and homegrown vegetables for sale from the small way-side stalls in the village and there is a thriving plant nursery and cafe. There is a welcoming community spirt in the village, making it a perfect place to unwind and take in the Norfolk air.

The Ostrich Inn, dating from the 1800s, has been refurbished to a high standard and now serves delicious locally sourced food in attractive surroundings.

History

On the hill above the village can be found the remnants of Bloodgate Hill fort, an Iron Age fortification that is the largest hill fort in Norfolk. It probably dates back around 300 years before the Romans. Roman coins and pottery have been found in the surrounding farmlands of the village.

Visit

Well worth a visit is Creake Abbey just outside of the village of North Creake with a lovely speciality shops. There is also an award-winning farmers' market on the last Saturday of each month. Close to Fakenham is the Pensthorpe Nature Reserve making for a lovely day out with walks around the lakes, gardens and also great fun for all the family with splendid children’s indoor and outdoor play areas. With the vast sandy beaches of the North Norfolk Coast just a short journey away at Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham, this village is a great base from which to explore North Norfolk.

We had a wonderful week at Josh Cottage the cottage and location are both perfect and we were very lucky with the weather. We were made to feel very welcome at The Ostrich pub in the village, and their Sunday Roast was very good.

The Cotton's, 11th of October 2024

We had a great week in Josh Cottage and were impressed by how welcoming and well maintained it was. The cottage is in a lovely open position opposite the village green bordered by a chalk stream. Many interesting places to visit nearby and not too far from the sea. We have no hesitation in recommending Josh Cottage and hope to return. We appreciated and enjoyed the good quality welcome pack. Lovely big lounge and dining room ideal for families. Best visit was to Holkham Hall.

What a pleasure it was to stay at Josh Cottage. Beautifully presented, so clean and comfortable. This is obviously a cottage where the owners care about the comfort and convenience of their guests. Comfortable sitting room, well equipped kitchen with quality appliances and very comfortable bedrooms with lovely quality bed linen. The welcome pack was the best we've seen! : We loved the outlook, especially the stream and enjoyed feeding the ducks. We had some lovely days out to Burnham Market, Wells Next the Sea, Holt, Sheringham and Old Hunstanton. Thank you for our stay in the beautiful and comfortable Joh Cottage!

Nice quiet location but ideal as a base to explore North Norfolk.Quiet location but lovely pub opposite with good food. Relaxing stay and nice to receive some lovely tasty goodies to enjoy

The Payton's, 6th of September 2024

We have been visiting Norfolk for many years and have regularly booked with Sowerbys. Josh Cottage is absolutely lovely - extremely well equipped, clean and comfortable. South Creake is a great location with Wells, Holkham, Burnham Market and Brancaster a short drive away. We very much appreciated the milk and welcome basket - which also included dog treats for our Spaniel. We visited all our regular haunts and the weather was wonderful - always a bonus!
A new pub for us was the Lord Nelson at Burnham Thorpe - really nice meal and reasonably priced. This time we also visited Sandringham (easily 15 years since we last visited!) I really wanted to see the new gardens the king has had designed. We had a really lovely day morning there.

The Pattison's, 23rd of August 2024

We much enjoyed our stay at Josh Cottage, a lovely house that felt like home. We particularly enjoyed the large rooms downstairs, entertaining 5 guests to tea. We found the beds very comfortable, and, with brief use of the fan before bedtime, not too hot in the heatwave. The patio garden was a joy to sit in. The house is very conveniently located at the centre of South Creake. We were mostly there for the North Norfolk Music Festival, for which Josh Cottage is ideally situated. It was a great pleasure to entertain friends at the cottage before concerts, something we couldn't do in a B&B or smaller property. We also went painting at Wells Beach, and enjoyed eating out with friends at the Duck in Stanhoe and family at Sculthorpe Mill. I've not seen a better holiday rental property and will certainly recommend Josh Cottage to friends and family. We hope to return.

This is a beautiful cottage in a great location in front of the Green. The cottage is very well equipped and comfortable. We enjoyed cycling around the Holkham estate. We also enjoyed various dog walks, including from Wells to Holkham. We would definitely go back to Josh Cottage and will recommend it to our friends.
