Floorplan
Beach
With its big blue skies and sandy beach, Wells award-winning beach is a popular family destination about a mile from the quay. It's well known for its long stretch of sand, iconic row of beach huts, sand dunes and pine woods.
Village
It's a delightful unspoilt historic town on the North Norfolk Coast with a jumble of old buildings and lanes still existing from its heritage as a port and former maltings industry. The picturesque quay and waterfront is still very much a working port with fishing boats still berthed in this small harbour and stalls selling locally caught shrimps, crabs and whelks. A popular place with sailors with many sailing and leisure craft here and local sailing tuition available. A distinctive landmark on the quay is the granary building with its overhanging gantry. Children enjoy the facilities round the quay and the challenge of crabbing (gillying) from the steep harbour wall.
The main shopping area of Wells is Staithe Street, a narrow, mostly pedestrianised lane with surviving Victorian and Edwardian shop fronts, that runs from the water's edge right up to the top part of town. In the centre of the town is The Buttlands which is a large rectangular green lined with Georgian and late Victorian houses, which used to be used for archery practise in mediaeval days. Now it is home to the excellent Crown hotel and restaurant which is run by Kiwi celebrity chef Chris Coubrough, as well as the popular The Globe Inn.
The quay has become one of the North Norfolk’s most popular and well-loved seaside destinations with a great selection of shops, galleries and places to eat, including the award winning French's fish & chips.
History
The name derives from the spring water which rises up through the chalk area. Guella is the name given in the doomsday book and later derived from Wella meaning spring. The supply of corn and grain was the main trade for the town of Wells, its seaport dates back to the fourteenth century. Wells was also known for the supply of malt, the town boasted to have up to twelve maltings and in 1750 this equated to a third of the exports of malt from the country. Wells port widely relies on the tides to gain access to the harbour as there is not a river running through it. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries its mariners were the first to bring herring and cod in large quantities from Iceland.
Visit
Only a couple of miles away along the coast road is Holkham Hall with its impressive 18th century Palladian architecture and 3,000 acre deer park. This is a must visit location for all the family with many lovely events taking place at Holkham throughout the year. There is also a nature reserve in and around the Holkham which includes all manner of wildlife habitats, flora and fauna. You can visit the Lookout for panoramic views whilst enjoying a cuppa located at the top of Lady Anne’s Drive. The beach at Holkham is absolutely beautiful and has often been used as the location for many films and music videos including ‘Shakespeare in Love’ and ‘The Duchess’. You will often see families with their four-legged friend or even weekend horse riders, or if you are lucky the Household Cavalry at the beach.

We had a great time in this modern style property, close to everything in town ,but quietly tucked away , plenty of eating and drinking places to fill up a week , comfortable beds and furniture , a very good place to stay The Crown does a lovely Roast dinner and Bang in Wells was very good , the Edinburgh is a busy locals pub service and beer were great, The Globe is worth a visit, overall great time.
Lovely house close to the quay with plenty of food venues and a good walking area. The weather was good though overcast all week but no wind and no rain. Fantastic for the Norfolk Coast.
Lovely property and great location and very well equipped. Highlights the main bedrooms with en suite.
Really well positioned cottage with lots of space. Beds were really comfy. Parking was a great benefit although we thought it would be a squeeze to have 2 cars there if neighbouring properties were occupied and a large car could struggle with the narrow entrance.
Thoroughly enjoyed our third stay at Harbour Cottage. It’s comfy and stylish, and has everything you need for a home-from-home feel, but in the most wonderful location! A perfect base for exploring Wells and beyond. Have booked to return again! Comfy beds and hot powerful showers were much appreciated after busy days filled with crabbing, exploring, walking, taking the train, boat trips, arcades, ice creams, fish and chips, carnival, seaside, sandcastles, paddling and bike rides!
The cottage was very clean, comfortable and well equipped and the beds very comfortable. It was also very peaceful. The highlights were walking around Wells itself, Holkham Hall, the train ride from Wells to Walsingham, Fellbrigg Hall and the Muckleburgh Collection,
Lovely break celebrating friends birthdays . Superb location, local to village and 20 minute walk to beach . Harbour view is well equipped, spacious and comfortable and the outside patio area and parking is a real bonus . Location, well equipped home. Lovely walks, lovely food eating out and at home .Would highly recommend.
A very enjoyable stay in this comfortable property. Would definitely visit again.
Perfect location tucked away in the centre. Beautiful very well equipped property, loved the open plan layout and sunny patio area suited us 3 couples on our Easter Break perfectly thank you, would love to re visit, milk and chocolate cake a nice touch! Thank you. Was lovely to be in walking distance of all that Wells has to offer, excellent visit to The Crabhouse on the Saturday evening, brunch at Bang in Wells, super walk to the Lifeboat Station and also took the Coasthopper to Cley and Blakeney, Absolutely brilliant. It’s a beautiful home and location.
Good position, handy for town and beach. Meals in The Crown were very good (advisable to book) and Coastliner bus helps for walking days. House was excellent for us - 2 couples.
We were two couples and this house was perfect to share. The two main bedrooms were almost mirror images of one another so easy and fair to allocate. The house is in a great spot with good parking. We used the buses to go both ways along the coast and you’re only a 5 to 10 minute walk from the bus stops. Well equipped with plenty of crockery and cutlery and lovely quality, fluffy towels. A lovely comfortable house, very well positioned with great private parking.
Great place to stay, comfortable home from home cottage. Kitchen had everything we needed, beds were comfy. We would definitely stay here again. Fantastic view from bedroom and only a short walk to all amenities.
Cottage is very well situated and very quiet location. Kitchen had plenty of pots and pans, plates, cups and glasses. Upstairs Rooms a lovely size with added bonus of en-suite for both. Kids loved having their own space and shower downstairs. Would definitely go back.
Our second time staying at this delightful property, and we had a wonderful holiday. The property is in a fantastic position, we loved waking up and looking out of the window to check the tide! The property is homely and comfortable, and suits our needs perfectly. The first floor open plan living area is our favourite place to relax after a busy day exploring Wells. We have already booked our third stay next summer.
Great place for a visit to Wells .Very quite location and so close to everything. House was bigger than expected and worked well for us. Great space to sit outside for alfresco lunches and the odd gin. Great to stay in wells. Location meant we could potter down to the harbour in the evening and watch the boats. Would love to stay here again and recommend to friends Trust this company.
Excellent location in a lovely town. We enjoyed the local pubs and the fish & chip shop. The local bakery excellent. Holkham worth a visit and the coastal walks are lovely. Loved the ability to walk from the property straight in town or along coast. Really lovely area and Holkham just a quick ride away.
Great location very comfortable property. We came to see the new lifeboat which has my husband’s late sister’s name on it. To see it launch & return on a test launch was out of this world. Great location for everything on the North Norfolk coast.
Great property in a great location in Wells, thank you! We really enjoyed the beaches, playground and ice cream!
I just wanted to write to thank you for an amazing holiday at Harbour cottage in Wells. The house exceeded our expectations, and it was beautifully presented. It was so well stocked with all the essentials, as well as things we hadn’t even thought of like extension cables and fans!
It was just such a pleasure to stay there, and the location is perfect. I have already booked to return next August!Well done to the owners. They have a lovely property here, clearly treasured.
We liked the open planned kitchen/living room/dining room and the location at Harbour Cottage, excellent! Staff at Sowerby have been so helpful, this holiday has been cancelled twice due to Covid. Even the cleaner that we met was exceptional helpful and friendly. Definitely book through Sowerbys again!
Excellent property - Very clean and comfortable property ideally placed. Wells is lovely.
Harbour Cottage was bigger and better location than we hoped for. Loved the location and all the rooms, particularly the living area. Great to have the garage to store things, We had a fantastic week.
Better than Expected - Nicely appointed, good layout, great location. It is very comfortable. The furnishings and beds are all very nice. The layout works well too. There is nothing we didn't like and we would like to stay again!
We loved the decor, layout, location, in fact almost everything car access! A lovely property that only lacks a view of the coast and a garden
A spacious property and the bedroom/bathroom ratio worked for us.
Stayed on an exceptionally cold weekend, but the house was very warm and comfortable.
Ideal property for 3 couples or a girls weekend - which ours was!
Lovely modern spacious house in a wonderful location
We all had a nice time in Wells-next-the-Sea. We went crabbing and fishing and went to the beach. At the beach we found lots of seashells and cockles and we made a mermaid in the sand. Me, Daniel and Mummy won lots of things in the arcade. Daniel won a giant plush Minion teddy. We all ahd a wonderful time. We hope to come back again soon. Love from Lily xxx
This cottage is lovely! We have had a fun week, enjoying Wells in this cottage. The restaurants are delicious and crabbing was fun as well.
I love this cottage so much! It has an excellent view and the cottage is cosy! I enjoyed crabbing on the harbour and eating local fish and chips. The location is amazing, with a lovely high street. I recommend the local cheese brie. Thank you!
