Coast
Renowned for its salt marshes and being rich in wildlife, Stiffkey has its own unique charm. This area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has many muddy creeks which are flooded daily by the tide and is an important habitat for breeding birds. Famous for two local delicacies: the samphire that grows here and the ‘Stewkey blues’ cockles named after the blue hue mud they live in. Take a long walk through the salt marshes and your efforts will be well worth it, you will find a glorious sandy beach and a really perfect picnic spot!
Village
An attractive quiet coastal village nestled between Wells-next-the-Sea and Blakeney. It has an enchanting local feel, with a lovely village shop The Stiffkey Stores with post office and cafe, well worth a visit for a hot chocolate after a long afternoon walk. The village has a great little local pub The Red Lion, super welcoming and serves great food too.
History
Stiffkey was first evident in the Domesday book of 1086 and means ‘stump island with stops of trees’. The village in the past had a small water mill that run off the river Stiffkey that passes through the village, little remains of the mill today. During World War II there was a military camp south of the marshes which was established in 1938 and remained in operation until the end of the war. RAF Aircraft would tow targets over the marshes for the the trainee gunners to aim at. After the war the camp was used for training USAAF B-29 gunners until the site closed in 1955. The remains of a ‘The Whirlygig’ a circular runway used to launch radio-controlled aerial targets by the USAAF can see be seen today. Other surviving buildings have been converted for agricultural use and is now the site of a camp-site.
Visit
Wells-next-the-Sea is the closest town to Stiffkey where you can enjoy some crabbing (gilllie- crabbing) which is fun to have a go off the harbour front for the whole family. Wells itself has some lovely shops and eateries. In the Summer months you can catch the little beach train from the town near the play park to the beach, there you will find vast sandy beaches, the lovely pine woods and Wells’ iconic row of beach huts. There are many wonderful villages to explore in north Norfolk, you are close to Walsingham a very historic and religious village with a healing shrine of Virgin Mary. There are lovely snow drop walks at the Walsingham Priory where from mid-January you can see carpets of glorious swathes of snowdrops.

Great cottage, quirky and comfortable. Great views from the first floor. Village store is great for lovely coffee and pastries. Will definitely recommend to family and friends.
What a lovely holiday we have had. Although the weather was not kind to us. After a long wet walk we were able to return to your warm comfy cottage and a hot bath and then a lovely meal at the Red Lion in stiffkey. Thank you
Cosy and comfortable. Brilliant for the dog with easy access to the coastal path and Stiffkey Marshes. Lovely birthday meal at The Red lion in Stiffkey and fantastic vegan ginger cake from Stiffkey Stores. I parked the car up on Monday and didn't get into again until having to come home Friday as everything was on the doorstep. A relaxing and thoroughly spoilt holiday. Having a bath. Not having to drive anywhere. Sitting in the garden in wonderful sunshine reading. Moscow mules to drink. Sleeping well in a comfy bed. Walking along the coastal path to morston quay listening to the birds and hardly seeing a soul. Having breakfast sat at the bar stool in the kitchen with the stable door open. Bliss. beautifully decorated and felt like home, well equipped kitchen. good parking. just thankful that such a lovely place is available to stay in. Will definitely like to come back sometime.

We had a lovely time at Fox Cottage The property/location was perfect. Very cosy. The walking around the salt marshes was fantastic.
Such a beautiful cosy cottage with easy access to fantastic walks along the coast to Wells (1hr 20mins) and Blakeney (1hr 30mins). Kitchen really well thought out and had everything you could need. Bedroom very comfortable and the shower room was really warm and spotlessly clean. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.
The fact that we hardly used the car, walking along the coast to Wells and Blakeney was stunning even in the rain. Would probably have used the bath if we had stayed in the summer.
Thanks so much, this is a beautifully furnished, decorated and equipped cottage. I had a very restful stay. Very quiet and is handy for the shop and the bus stop.

Fantastic couple of weeks in a lovely cottage. I've been to North Norfolk before but Stiffkey has been my favourite - brilliant access to the coastal path and marshes. Mike and Brett at no 8 were so welcoming - Mike took me out across the marshes to see the seals - a highlight! Also loved: Holkham/Wells/Burnham Overy Staithe beach you can walk for hours. Eric's Fish & Chips in Thornham, Blakeney and Morstens and the walk between the Two Magpies bakeries. Holme-next-the-Sea reserve. The Red Lion and so much more!
Beautiful cottage in a great location. Smack bang between a lovely pub with great food and the local Stiffkey stores with great coffee and giftware. 15 mins from the coastal path to take you to Wells or Blakeney on an hours walk.
