Beach

With its big blue skies and sandy beach, Wells award-winning beach is a popular family destination about a mile from the quay. It's well known for its long stretch of sand, iconic row of beach huts, sand dunes and pine woods.

Village

It's a delightful unspoilt historic town on the North Norfolk Coast with a jumble of old buildings and lanes still existing from its heritage as a port and former maltings industry. The picturesque quay and waterfront is still very much a working port with fishing boats still berthed in this small harbour and stalls selling locally caught shrimps, crabs and whelks. A popular place with sailors with many sailing and leisure craft here and local sailing tuition available. A distinctive landmark on the quay is the granary building with its overhanging gantry. Children enjoy the facilities round the quay and the challenge of crabbing (gillying) from the steep harbour wall.

The main shopping area of Wells is Staithe Street, a narrow, mostly pedestrianised lane with surviving Victorian and Edwardian shop fronts, that runs from the water's edge right up to the top part of town. In the centre of the town is The Buttlands which is a large rectangular green lined with Georgian and late Victorian houses, which used to be used for archery practise in mediaeval days. Now it is home to the excellent Crown hotel and restaurant which is run by Kiwi celebrity chef Chris Coubrough, as well as the popular The Globe Inn.

The quay has become one of the North Norfolk’s most popular and well-loved seaside destinations with a great selection of shops, galleries and places to eat, including the award winning French's fish & chips.

History

The name derives from the spring water which rises up through the chalk area. Guella is the name given in the doomsday book and later derived from Wella meaning spring. The supply of corn and grain was the main trade for the town of Wells, its seaport dates back to the fourteenth century. Wells was also known for the supply of malt, the town boasted to have up to twelve maltings and in 1750 this equated to a third of the exports of malt from the country. Wells port widely relies on the tides to gain access to the harbour as there is not a river running through it. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries its mariners were the first to bring herring and cod in large quantities from Iceland.

Visit

Only a couple of miles away along the coast road is Holkham Hall with its impressive 18th century Palladian architecture and 3,000 acre deer park. This is a must visit location for all the family with many lovely events taking place at Holkham throughout the year. There is also a nature reserve in and around the Holkham which includes all manner of wildlife habitats, flora and fauna. You can visit the Lookout for panoramic views whilst enjoying a cuppa located at the top of Lady Anne’s Drive. The beach at Holkham is absolutely beautiful and has often been used as the location for many films and music videos including ‘Shakespeare in Love’ and ‘The Duchess’. You will often see families with their four-legged friend or even weekend horse riders, or if you are lucky the Household Cavalry at the beach.

Yet again we’ve had a very lovely restful week at no6 The Granary - we’ve stayed at this property many many times & when we arrive it feels very welcoming - car parking is always good & the lift very handy on arrival & departure !!!! The views are outstanding & there’s always something going on on the quay - boats arriving & departing - seagulls making a racket. We love coastal walking & the buses are brilliant & we often get a bus to a coastal village & then walk back to Wells . The walk from Burnham Overy Staithe to Holkham is really beautiful especially on the beach then we have lunch at The Lookout at Holkham then set off back to Wells , another favourite is bus to Morston, lunch @ the Red Lion @ Stiffkey then walk back to Wells .

The Stewart's, 9th of September 2024

A beautiful, well equipped apartment set right on the quayside. The views are stunning both to the north and east. From the comfort of the apartment you can watch the ever changing tides and the fishermen unload their catch. At low tide a variety of bird life is visible on the marshes, although the apartment is conveniently situated right at the centre of the vibrant town of Wells-Next-The-Sea. The beautiful beach at Wells, and the walk towards Holkham. Also the views and walk along the coastal path to Stiffkey. Discovering the history of Wells - the Heritage Centre at the Maltings is well worth a visit. And of course fish and chips from French’s.

The Mitchell's, 29th of August 2024

: Very comfortable well equipped and clean property in a great location and with nice views.

The Robr's, 12th of August 2024

What a view! A perfect flat for two, right in the middle of everything but very peaceful too. Parking space was an added bonus essential in a town like this.We had a wonderful week, the flat was so close to all the activities we didn’t venture too far but did enjoy a visit to Houghton hall.

The Jones', 2nd of August 2024

Excellent apartment ,with a fantastic view and extremely well equipped . Lovely walks very close by and an amazing beach . Wells is very pretty with lots of very good restaurants and local shops.

The Mcools, 1st of August 2024

A wonderful property as always with spectacular views.Just extremely relaxing and lovely to get away from daily life.

The Hudson's, 5th of July 2024

Lovely location. Really enjoyed watching the boats coming and going. Had some great days out including Sandringham and Walsingham (using the little staem train). Highly recommend the Crabhouse and The Bowling Green for food.

The Moffat's, 1st of July 2024

This was our third stay in the apartment so perhaps it's needless to say that we love it there. The endlessly changing views of the harbour, marshes and coast are spectacular. Being in Wells itself is a lovely experienceCoastal walks from, for instance, Holkham to Wells, or taking a bus to Cley and walking back to Blakeney. A visit to Houghton Hall was a must to take in the Anthony Gormley sculptures. Dinner at The Victoria at Holkham was excellent.

Marcus and Carolyn, 28th of June 2024

Lovely apartment with stunning views. Everything we needed for the holiday was provided. Plenty of space, comfy bed, and well equipped kitchen. Everything in Wells was within walking distance, and having a parking space behind the apartment was a real bonus.Views over the estuary. Boat trip round the harbour in the Lucy Lavers. Visiting local stately homes and gardens. Oh - and excellent fish & chips. Can also highly recommend the coffee at Wills of Wells, which is virtually next door to the apartment.

Pauline, 15th of June 2024

The view was amazing watching the ebb & flow of the tide . The fishermen were fascinating watching them off load their catches at the end of a long day & watching them leave in the early hours too .

The Winfield's, 27th of May 2024

Lovely apartment for our short break to Norfolk. Very comfortable, spacious and well equipped apartment. The views from both the bedroom and lounge are spectacular. Just to sit back and watch the life on the Quay go by from the comfort of the apartment is very special. For those less able the lift to the second floor is great. Also the big bonus in Wells is to have onsite parking. The views are amazing. The apartment is so well situated for the shops and also to walk the mile to the beach but also very quiet being on the second floor. Lovely to watch the fishing boats go out and come back with their catch. Highly recommend The Wells Crab House if you love fish and seafood although you have to book well in advance.
Sowerbys were extremely helpful with all aspects of our booking and arrival process and very efficient.

The Barker's, 17th of May 2024

An excellent and roomy one-bedroom flat, with a perfect location on the waterfront. There was always something interesting to watch. As always, Wells next the Sea is an excellent and central base for enjoying the North Norfolk coast and the countryside inland from it. It is also easy to get about by bus, and we didn't use the car much at all. Good walking.A coastline that never fails to be stunning.Good birdwatching.Watching the coming and going of the fishing boats, according to the state of the tide.Good food in a selection of cafes and pubs. The Jolly Sailors at Brancaster Staithe is always a favourite. Being only a few steps from French's chippy is also very useful. As they give a 10% discount for Blue Light and Defence Discount card holders, we just had to patronise them twice in the week. Thank you, Sowerbys, for your efficiency. this is the second time we have done business with you - last year it was 2, Smugglers Cove.

The Rose's, 1st of May 2024

Second visit to the Granary and had yet again wonderful hol.The views were magnificent and the excitement of the tidal surge from above was memorable. The apartment was in fine shape and we hope to return. Highlights were the dining out at The Crown and Crabhouse. The coastal path walks, the wildlife and the wonderful weather considering the forecast from the previous week. Thanks to all once again.

The Thompson's, 29th of April 2024

We really enjoyed our week in this property. The rooms are large, light, and comfortably furnished. The apartment is very well equipped with a lot of bits and pieces that you'd have in a home but often don't get in a rental eg scissors, matches and candles. There were also some 'Welcome' items which were much appreciated. The location is excellent - right in town, but also just on the edge, so quiet. View is superb. We were relieved that there is excellent parking on site. Wells is a great place to stay. There are some shops, pubs, buses etc so we were able to have some car free days. Lovely walks in both directions.

The Gregory, 11th of April 2024

As always a lovely relaxing few days just watching the world go by. There was everything needed to cook etc.

The Hudson's, 26th of March 2024

Watching the tides and boats. Good walks directly from the property. We thought it was a very well positioned property with great views, comfortable and generally well equipped. Definitely hope to stay again.

The Flood's, 21st of March 2024

We had a lovely stay here, the Granary is a fabulous location, the lift to the 2nd floor was very much appreciated, for the views of course, and for all other places we wanted to visit. We're quite foodie people so, naturally we had a booking for Wells Crab Restaurant, and also managed to have a spectacular fish supper supplied by French's. The obligatory Sunday was at the Globe, and we visited the war Memorial social club to watch football both Saturday and Sunday, and they were very friendly and looked after us well. The Granary apartment itself was great, everything we needed, it did take us a little while to recognise the bottle opener that was supplied, we'd never seen one like that before. The bathroom was lovely and big, the home was lovely and warm, bed was great, and dropping off the keys back to the other village wasn't really a problem as it was on the way home to Suffolk anyway. All in all a very good stay, and I'd recommend it.

The Memorys', 8th of March 2024

A lovely apartment that feels like home-from-home, with amazing views over the quayside and beyond Great location with stunning views. Lift access was very helpful.

The Lilpop's, 5th of February 2024

The apartment is spacious and very comfortable, equipped as a home with everything you might need. Its location, not only in Wells, such a nice town, but also so central on the quayside meant it was easy and quick to get around nearby. Although not used, the bus service and coastal hopper bus was available very close by. Car parking very close to the apartment entrance was very useful and convenient. The apartment being on the second floor (the lift was very useful) meant there were wonderful unbroken views to the North and East. It was interesting to watch the fishing boats at close quarters depart and return with their daily catch. Our second day, unexpectedly, coincided with the Wells Xmastide day: large craft fair, live music, food stalls, parades, Xmas lights turned on, a flotilla of lit up fishing boats cruising the harbour the last of which has Father Christmas for the kids and finally, a large firework display.

The Smith's, 5th of December 2023

3rd. visit to 6 The Granary. We had a lovely few days including a visit to Thursford Christmas show, fairly kind weather and great fish & chips!! Wells was lovely and peaceful and we were able to appreciate it without the crows that summer brings.

The Murry's, 20th of November 2023

The location is unbeatable, the views over the harbour and out to sea are wonderful. The views and walking on the coastal path and through Holkham . Many lovely places to eat as well.

The Dack's, 11th of November 2023

We had yet another wonderful week staying at 6 the Granary- it’s the 12th time we’ve stayed there so you can guess that we really love staying there - sadly it may be the last time we stay there as the owners have put it on the market . The apartment is really lovely & feels very homely so each time we stay it’s like going home !!! If the new owners decide to continue to rent maybe you could let us know? The ease of parking is an asset as is the lift to get our stuff up to level 2 & down when you leave . When you step into the apartment you instantly feel at home . The views from every window are spectacular so we’ve spent many hours looking out at the ever changing scenes , tides etc . The welcome gifts are very thoughtful & much appreciated. . The apartment is very well stocked with all you need for cooking & the bed is extremely comfortable. All in all it’s a wonderful place to stay & we will really miss being able to stay there . It’s very close to everything you need for shopping, bus service, coastal paths etc etc .
