Beach

With its big blue skies and sandy beach, Wells award-winning beach is a popular family destination about a mile from the quay. It's well known for its long stretch of sand, iconic row of beach huts, sand dunes and pine woods.

Village

It's a delightful unspoilt historic town on the North Norfolk Coast with a jumble of old buildings and lanes still existing from its heritage as a port and former maltings industry. The picturesque quay and waterfront is still very much a working port with fishing boats still berthed in this small harbour and stalls selling locally caught shrimps, crabs and whelks. A popular place with sailors with many sailing and leisure craft here and local sailing tuition available. A distinctive landmark on the quay is the granary building with its overhanging gantry. Children enjoy the facilities round the quay and the challenge of crabbing (gillying) from the steep harbour wall.

The main shopping area of Wells is Staithe Street, a narrow, mostly pedestrianised lane with surviving Victorian and Edwardian shop fronts, that runs from the water's edge right up to the top part of town. In the centre of the town is The Buttlands which is a large rectangular green lined with Georgian and late Victorian houses, which used to be used for archery practise in mediaeval days. Now it is home to the excellent Crown hotel and restaurant which is run by Kiwi celebrity chef Chris Coubrough, as well as the popular The Globe Inn.

The quay has become one of the North Norfolk’s most popular and well-loved seaside destinations with a great selection of shops, galleries and places to eat, including the award winning French's fish & chips.

History

The name derives from the spring water which rises up through the chalk area. Guella is the name given in the doomsday book and later derived from Wella meaning spring. The supply of corn and grain was the main trade for the town of Wells, its seaport dates back to the fourteenth century. Wells was also known for the supply of malt, the town boasted to have up to twelve maltings and in 1750 this equated to a third of the exports of malt from the country. Wells port widely relies on the tides to gain access to the harbour as there is not a river running through it. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries its mariners were the first to bring herring and cod in large quantities from Iceland.

Visit

Only a couple of miles away along the coast road is Holkham Hall with its impressive 18th century Palladian architecture and 3,000 acre deer park. This is a must visit location for all the family with many lovely events taking place at Holkham throughout the year. There is also a nature reserve in and around the Holkham which includes all manner of wildlife habitats, flora and fauna. You can visit the Lookout for panoramic views whilst enjoying a cuppa located at the top of Lady Anne’s Drive. The beach at Holkham is absolutely beautiful and has often been used as the location for many films and music videos including ‘Shakespeare in Love’ and ‘The Duchess’. You will often see families with their four-legged friend or even weekend horse riders, or if you are lucky the Household Cavalry at the beach.

Guest reviews

This flat was occupied by my sister and brother-in-law and we would go between flat 4 and 5. It is a beautiful flat, obviously recently renovated to a very high standard.

The Breslin's, 3rd of June 2024

Wonderful views, cleanliness of the apartment, lovely welcome basket, comfortable furniture and furnishings, dedicated parking space, well-equipped kitchen, good internet access, spaciousness, great location for accessing shops etc

Paula, 31st of May 2024

Nice apartment in a fantastic location, great for bird watching and the changing tides. Stay highlights the view.

The Gorner's, 20th of April 2024

Pauls Maltings certainly came up to our expectations and we agree with everyone else that the views from the windows are delightful for the scenery, weather watching and for observing all that is happening outside.

The Ralph's, 12th of April 2024

The apartment was excellent and very clean. We appreciated the ‘welcome basket of goodies’ a very nice touch. Fire was lovely in the evening. T V worked very well, everything we wanted in the apartment. Heating was excellent. Thank you, a lovely property.

The Atwood's, 8th of April 2024

A lovely apartment with a fantastic view from the window. Particularly nice out of high season when Wells is fairly quiet. Lots of nice walks and not too far from Blakeney Point, Holkham Lookout when walking. Highlights of our stay were being able to walk to Holkham Beach from the apartment, looking from the window to see seals in the harbour. Also the presence of Spoonbills along the East Quay and being able to see them in the evenings. The parking spot was particularly convenient, with no parking issues (as sometimes happens with holiday accommodation!).

The Dupelock's, 26th of March 2024

The flat was very clean with lovely views. Everything was provided, from hand soap to kitchen roll - it was extremely well-equipped. Sowerbys were very helpful and made sure that the heating was on and the flat was lovely and warm. We had a wet week unfortunately but we’re happy that we had a very nice flat to come back to, when we were cold and wet! Would definitely recommend. The cleanliness, the equipment and the lovely views. Wells itself was as picturesque as ever and even looked good in the rain!

The Page 's, 26th of February 2024

Another lovely stay, very comfortable apartment, views outstanding. Looking out over the harbour and sea each day. RSPB Titchwell and Norfolk Wildlife Reserve at Cley were fantastic to visit.

The Beale's, 19th of February 2024

Stunning location and view so whatever the weather you are in for a treat. Lots of walks in the area. Made good use of the Coastliner and Coasthopper buses. Sitting in comfort just looking out of the windows and doing the walks we did using the buses to get back. we've had a lovely week.

The Long's, 12th of February 2024

Another fabulous week at 4 Pauls Maltings. We love Wells and this apartment has everything we need - great position by the harbour, comfortable and well equipped, and it has a fantastic view from the living room. It's the perfect base for a week of walking on the coast. We walked along the coast every day, using the local bus services to get to Blakeney, Cley and Burnham Deepdale when we wanted to start our walks further afield.

The Naylor's, 27th of December 2023

Lovely, warm, comfortable apartment with fabulous views even in December. The welcome pack was a lovely surprise. The apartment had everything we needed and was lovely & quiet as I don't think any of the others were occupied while we were there.Great to have parking included & very close to all amenities. You could certainly park the car & leave it .The Two Magpies bakery downstairs was a great addition to the area if not our waistlines! We would certainly book this again. We had great meals at The Crabpot & at Bang in Wells. Both excellent. The walk to the beach is great for wildlife spotting as is the reserve at Holkham. Holt is lovely & we went to Titchwell, Sheringham & Cromer.

The Kirkbride's, 19th of December 2023

Highlights definitely the views and also very comfortable and warm.

The Mcardle's, 15th of November 2023

At Sowerbys Francesca and the rest of the team could not be any more wonderful, and 4 Pauls Maltings we had been before and we will aim to go again very soon and also recommend to family and friends, its a beautiful apartment with everything you need and the View just takes your breath away, just love it. Thank you so much to the Landlord that was so understanding and kind with our change of dates. Thank you again. Perfect place, perfect view.

The Martin's, 9th of November 2023

Lovely property in a great location, right in the town and lots of places to visit nearby. Great views from property. A bonus having a parking space. Nice places to eat out and all within walking distance.

The Easterbrook's, 23rd of August 2023

Brilliant location, lovely views. Apartment very clean. Wells next to sea and surrounding area excellent.

the Strother's, 11th of July 2023

Beautiful views from the flat. The welcome pack is a really nice gesture. The flat was spotlessly clean, well equipped and comfortable.

The Breslin's, 19th of June 2023

The apartment has a great location with a superb view of the harbour. We slept well in the comfortable beds and found the flat very well equipped. The welcome pack was very generous. Thank you! We loved sitting in the living room and watching the water in the harbour. Also, the apartment is a perfect base for walks along the coast.

The Beck's, 24th of April 2023

Amazing view, very good location along the coast , apartment very comfortable. Highlights were the closeness to Titchwell reserve and Cley.

The Beale's, 1st of March 2023

We loved the apartment and especially the views. We have stayed in this apartment a few times. The weather was extremely good for the time of year so we were able to get out every day.

The Driscoll's, 14th of February 2023

The view was definitely a major reason why we booked this place and we spent quite a bit of time looking at the changing tides.

The Killingworth's, 12th of January 2023

The view from the windows was a real highlight. we loved it so much weve booked again for next year.

The Desborough's, 12th of December 2022

This was our second stay at 4 Pauls Maltings and the view from the lounge windows was as stunning as we remembered it. As well as the great view, the flat had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and it made a good base for a week of walking along the coast. Wells has good independent food shops and during our stay we discovered a handy short-cut from Tunns Yard to Staithe Street. Thanks to the frequent buses, we left our car untouched in the car park all week.
Highlights of our week included walking along the coast path and across the marshes; spotting a huge variety of migrating birds both during our walks and from the apartment windows; dinner at the Wells Crab House.
Improved or would have liked in the property: The flat was very comfortable, it had everything we needed and the heating problems we experienced last year had been sorted out.

The Naylor's, 18th of November 2022

The apartment is situated in an ideal place right on the Harbourside, complete with a parking space which is a premium in Wells. The apartment was well furnished with everything we could want warm and comfortable. The highlight must have been eating fish and chips on the harbour knowing we were only a few steps away from the apartment

Robert & Glenda, 17th of October 2022

The Oakeys, 14th of October 2022
