Village

The attractive village of South Creake (twinned with North Creake) has a lovely village green at its heart with the river Burn that runs through. When visiting the village, you will see the much-loved resident ducks crossing the road from the houses for a swim on the river. There is a lovely leafy recreation ground, park and village hall making it the hub of the village. You will often see local produce such as cakes and homegrown vegetables for sale from the small way-side stalls in the village and there is a thriving plant nursery and cafe. There is a welcoming community spirt in the village, making it a perfect place to unwind and take in the Norfolk air.

The Ostrich Inn, dating from the 1800s, has been refurbished to a high standard and now serves delicious locally sourced food in attractive surroundings.

History

On the hill above the village can be found the remnants of Bloodgate Hill fort, an Iron Age fortification that is the largest hill fort in Norfolk. It probably dates back around 300 years before the Romans. Roman coins and pottery have been found in the surrounding farmlands of the village.

Visit

Well worth a visit is Creake Abbey just outside of the village of North Creake with a lovely speciality shops. There is also an award-winning farmers' market on the last Saturday of each month. Close to Fakenham is the Pensthorpe Nature Reserve making for a lovely day out with walks around the lakes, gardens and also great fun for all the family with splendid children’s indoor and outdoor play areas. With the vast sandy beaches of the North Norfolk Coast just a short journey away at Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham, this village is a great base from which to explore North Norfolk.

Guest reviews

A very peaceful and enjoyable stay at this lovely cottage. It has a very welcoming feel about it and we loved our few days there. Very handily situated for trips to Fakenham, Burnham Market and Creake Abbey. Also great for wildlife spotting from the back door - we saw bats, an owl, deer and the odd hare of course

The Grant-Hickley's, 12th of October 2023

Beautiful cottage. Made to feel very welcome with the hamper. The decor and touches make it feel just like home! Fresh flowers, a lovely touch. Superb food at the Lord Nelson in Burnham Thorpe. Lovely walks in Brancaster and Holkham. Sandringham worth the visit. We hope to be back soon.

Wonderful cottage, beautifully renovated and equipped. Thank you

Hare cottage is in a peaceful area - over looking a field with just the sound of the birds. It’s been beautifully thought out - comfortable, well equipped with lovely touches. It’s convenient as it’s close to Burnham Market for buying food and not far from the coast and interesting places to visit.

The Dunn's, 13th of July 2023

The most immaculate holiday cottage I've ever stayed in! The decor, furniture and cleanliness was top notch and faultless. Great location with a lovely view over the fields, plenty of extra parking not far away on top of the included parking space and a pub serving good food a couple of minutes walk away.

The Marvel's, 21st of June 2023

Our second stay at this beautiful cottage. Despite the cold weather we were warm and cosy. The owners go above and beyond with a very generous welcome basket and vases of flowers. The property is cleaned to a very high standard. I would highly recommend a stay at Hare Cottage.
The cosiness of the cottage as the weather was very cold. The convenience of The Ostrich Pub/Restaurant. The central location to explore the North Norfolk Coast.

The O'Sullivan's, 15th of March 2023

The best equipped cottage we have ever visited. Every attention to detail to make guests welcome including a very thoughtful welcome hamper. Spotlessly clean and stylish décor throughout. Would highly recommend this property. The welcome hamper especially the home made plum jam was a highlight . The weather was mostly dry and sunny so we were able to enjoy a drink in the pretty garden overlooking the fields. Loved the little touch of the vases of flowers

Thank you for a wonderful stay. The cottage is beautiful and immaculately presented. I loved the little homely touches everywhere. The welcome basket was so nice to come in to after our long journey and did make us instantly feel welcomed. The cottage itself was one of the best equipped and cleanest we have ever rented. Out and about we had some lovely days out at Wells gorgeous beach and cage. Sunset walks at Holkham and fabulous food at The Ostrich pub in the village. Weather was very kind and we were lucky enough to have a heatwave whilst we were here. All of the family came, my sister and daughter hired other cottages in the village and we made some very happy memories. Already saying we are thinking of coming back next year!

The Hodgson's, 5th of August 2022

We had a wonderful holiday at this fantastic cottage. It's in a great location for exploring North Norfolk and we will definitely be back. The kids enjoyed the local park (and ducks!) and the pib was nice too. Holkham bike-riding was a highlight.

The Harman's, 29th of July 2022

What an absolute gem of a cottage! It was spotlessly clean and so comfortable and well-equipped. We couldn't have asked for more. We have been blessed with a lovely week of weather. We have had lots of trips out. Houghton Hall and gardens were lovely, Brancaster beach, Holkham beach and walled gardens. We love the Dun Cow at Salthouse.

The Allen's, 10th of June 2022

Wow! What a gorgeous cottage! We've had a fabulous stay in spite of some mixed weather. The cottage was so comfortble and had everything we needed. We love this coast and visit often but this was our first time in South Creake and would definitely return to 4 Hare Cottage. Recommendations as follows; a cake from Sally's Cake Stall on the main village road. Delicious! An evening walk on Holkham Beach when it's deserted. The walled garden at Holkham Hall, so stunning. It has been such a brilliant week, thank you for the lovely touches, so appreciated!
