There is a worthwhile and picturesque mile long walk across the creeks, here you will reach the often quiet, stunning and dog friendly sandy beach of Thornham Bay. Continue along to the popular boardwalk to Holme Dunes NWT Nature reserve with interesting habitats of flora and fauna from natterjack toads and migrating birds.

Village

The village is notable as magnet for foodies and day trippers with seriously good shopping. Drove Orchards on the outskirts of Thornham has an impressive Farm Shop where you can PYO and is notable for its apple juice, fishmongers and a small selection of lifestyle shops. You may of heard of the ‘not to be missed’ Eric’s Fish and Chips, where you can enjoy a beer with your meal and children love the desserts, a fried jam sandwich, or ice cream where they can help themselves to tasty toppings. Thornham Deli, cafe and store is also great for a browse or bite to eat and it's next door to the Village Hall and play park.  There are also two great village pubs to choose from.:The Orange Tree award winning gastro pub, ideal for families with outdoor play area and The Lifeboat Inn, a traditional and atmospheric haven, often with a roaring fire and warm welcome for every guest including salty sea dogs.

History

Thornham is named after the Old English meaning ‘homestead or village where the thorn trees grow’. The village has a rich history and many of the buildings date back to the 16th Century. Archaeological evidence dates as far back as the Bronze Age. The village had a prosperous harbour 200 years ago and a fascinating story of a smugglers Inn and a bandit’s hideout.

Visit

Nestled between the villages of Holme-next-the-Sea and Titchwell both with bird and wildlife visitors’ centres RSPB Titchwell and NWT Nature reserve. There are many other villages to explore within a short distance like Brancaster, Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham with their great family beaches. Brancaster Staithe is popular with sailors and courses and lessons can be taken here or at Morston. You can learn to be a smuggler, explore the coast or sail the creeks with The Coastal Exploration Company, or take a seal trip to Blakeney Point from Morston Quay. Dalegate Market in Burnham Deepdale is a nice area to visit the shops or visit the quintessential village of Burnham Market where you can source most Norfolk delicacies from the independent and quaint shops that surround the village green.

Guest reviews

Very comfortable cottage with all our needs met. Location was perfect near excellent pubs and the famous Thornham deli and Drove orchard; the beaches and walks are fabulous and the Jubilee Meadow for walking the fog was a brilliant facility - a note telling guests about that would be very helpful. The cottage was very cosy and comfortable with great shower and hot water. Very good to have two toilets in a small cottage. a super holiday and the cottage played a big part in that so we have booked again next year.

the bailey's, 13th of October 2023

We love this property and and this is our second visit. The house is ideally located in Thornham, well placed to access the local pub and walks, and not too far to reach the coastal path and beech.

The Brough's, 28th of August 2023

A lovely cottage in a great spot. The parking spot is an added bonus. Thornham is a lovely village and a great base for exploring the wonderful North Norfolk coast. We were blessed with good weather, sunny but not too hot for Ted the dog! We loved the walk to the beach at Burnham overy Staithe and Holkham is also fabulous. Lovely day in Wells next the sea and we also had a run out to Aylsham where we caught the little steam train to Wroxham.

The Burton's, 22nd of August 2023

The cottage was lovely. So quaint and fresh. Well equipped and comfortable. Stay highlights the beaches and nature reserves of the area.

The Buchan's, 22nd of August 2023

A lovely, well equipped, clean cottage in a fantastic location. 2 good size rooms. One twin, one double and a bathroom with excellent shower upstairs.
A comfy sitting room, well equipped kitchen and utility/loo downstairs. All nicely decorated. There is a very secure garden out the back and a lovely front garden and parking from the back. The cottage has everything you need for a week and a very short walk to pubs and the deli. It was faultless.I will always book with Sowerby's as their standards are high. Location. Thornham is a great village but it's a short drive to Hunstanton, Wells, Holkham.

The Howard's, 18th of August 2023

Clean and comfortable cottage in a great location. Large enclosed gardens great for dogs with a excellent sunny aspect. Loved the outside rattan furniture, spent a lot of time in the garden !

The Groom's, 11th of July 2023

Lovely well equipped cottage with a secluded garden with outside seating. Local walks, deserted beach and great local amenities, including the Orange Tree, Lifeboat Inn, the Deli and Drove Orchards, all in the village.

The Chamberlain's, 29th of June 2023

One of the nicest cottages we’ve ever stayed in, lovely village and our highlights were Eric’s fish and chips and farm shop and ice cream at Drove Orchard! We didn’t have good weather so didn’t do things that we had planned…..but hopefully next time! A lovely restful week in a beautiful cottage!
