Village

Possibly one of the prettiest villages in North Norfolk, this Georgian village is within easy access to the North Norfolk Coast, still with a quaint feel, with many trendy shops. The village retains a ‘step back in time’ feel with leafy green trees and picturesque village green. Burnham Market has a traditional post office, book shop and hardware shop as well as beautiful boutiques and lifestyle shops, from the butchers and baker to fine dining and deli’s. There’s a superb fishmonger Gurneys with locally caught seafood including Brancaster mussels and Cromer crab - be sure to try the amazing fresh fishcakes. It’s a lovely village to visit to peruse the shops or even for a bite to eat in one of the restaurants. There are a lot of eateries to choose from… The Hoste for fine dining or afternoon tea, No Twenty9, The Nelson, award-winning Socius, Burnham Tearoom, or Tilly’s Cafe, there’s something to suit every taste. There is also a children’s play park, hard tennis courts and two parish churches one at each end of the village. If in need of a little pampering why not book a treatment or two at The Hoste Beauty Spa.There is also a dog groomer so you can have the best pampered pooch in the village.

Visit

With a scenic ride to the coast, you can enjoy lazy days on the beaches of Brancaster or Wells. Alternatively pull on your walking boots and investigate diverse coastal path walks, taking in all the birds and wildlife. Leave the car behind and pop on the Coastal Hopper bus and do a tour from Wells and The Burnhams to Norfolk's west coast. Don't forget to visit Holkham which not only has a superb beach, but majestic Holkham Hall which is well worth a visit: hire a boat on the lake, hop on a bike to explore the woodlands, test your bravery on the rope course, play in the woodland play park, take in the breathtaking rooms and art in the main house or simply enjoy tea and cake in the courtyard cafe. If big houses are your thing there are many others to visit with Houghton Hall and its fantastic sculpture collection, the house and grounds of Royal Sandringham to name a few! Get on the water, there are many activities from kite and windsurfing in Hunstanton, sailing in Brancaster Staithe, seal and boat trips from Brancaster and Wells, or take a beautiful trip on The Coastal Exploration Company and learn about the wildlife, trading and smuggling in the salt marshes or along the coast.

Guest reviews

We have enjoyed many self catering holidays during the past few years and were pleased with the quality of the property. We thought it was good value for money.

We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage is welcoming and comfortable. It was clean and all the bed linen was of a lovely quality. We know the area well and the weather was beautiful so we we were able to visit all of our favourite places.

The Ilott 's, 10th of July 2023

Beautiful house in an equally beautiful village. We thought The Old Forge was very well decorated and equipped generally and the garden was also very attractive. The added advantage was the off road parking. Exceedingly clean and well decorated house. Also very nice garden area.

The Craven's, 6th of April 2023

We like The Old Forge for the room sizes and layout; choice of decor and quality of the finishing; quality of the towels and bedding; outside space (although we never actually used it due to poor weather). We would stay again!

Third time at property so we knew how lovely it was. What we liked about the property, Too much to mention. The list would be endless. Thank you to everybody concerned. We had a lovely time.

The Bennett Family, 12th of April 2021

It’s a beautiful home that we’ve been fortunate to visit before, it suits us perfectly, excellent location and facilities. Well done to the housekeepers, it’s always been clean but we really did feel it was especially clean and felt extremely Covid 19 safe. Just hope the pandemic allows us to visit again soon. Must mention that we thought the kitchen tv was a welcome addition since our last visit, was great to catch up with the news at breakfast time.

The Hook Family, 18th of September 2020

We all had a really great stay and the house has a warm and welcoming feel and is very nicely furnished. We loved, loved , loved the wall mounted map and thought it was an inspired idea to help guests get their bearings.

The Old Forge had a good location and overall feel. Very well maintained and the showers are really good. The property has everything you need for a week in Norfolk. Just want to thank all at Sowerbys for another great holiday in Norfolk and to also add thanks for the added COVID consideration.

Electric Vehicle charging

Cars may only be charged if there is an EV charging point fitted at the property. The cost of electricity is NOT included in the rental price and Sowerbys Holiday Cottages must be notified if the charger is used and an additional surcharge will be made.
