Historical Information

The Long Cottage was originally stabling for the Holkham Hall estate until 1872 when it was converted into two semi-detached cottages. At the start of the nineteenth century it was purchased by Edward VII as it bordered the Sandringham estate and it's rumoured that his desire was because the grey partridge shooting was better! In the 1970s the house was bought from the Queen's estate by the local MP who extended it and converted it into one private dwelling.

Floorplan

Village

This beautiful area is best known for the location of Sandringham House the royal holiday home. The stunning house is perhaps the most famous stately home in Norfolk and sits at the heart of the 20,000-acre Sandringham Estate. The beautiful gardens around the house extend to 60 acres. In spring there are displays of rhododendrons and magnolias as well as havens for bees and butterflies in the summer. Surrounding the house and gardens are the 600 acres of heath and woodland of the superb Country Park, which is open to the public daily.

There is plenty to do on a trip to Sandringham - you will need at least four hours to explore the house alone.  Walk on one of the trails, enjoy a picnic, visit the Adventure Play Area or maybe enjoy an ice cream or lunch in the Sandringham Cafe and Coffee Shop. The Estate also has an Exhibition and Transport Museum which holds an amazing collection from the very first Royal car to the 1939 Merryweather fire engine.

History

Sandringham village is the birthplace of Diana Princess of Wales.

The parish church of St Mary Magdalene, Sandringham, is considered to be one of the finest carrstone buildings in existence and dates back in its present form to the 16th century. A country church of exceptional historic interest, with memorials to many members and relations of the Royal Family from Queen Victoria onwards. It is used regularly as a place of worship by the Royal Family, which normally includes Christmas.

Visit

Sandringham is conveniently situated close to the west and north Norfolk Coast. There are many beaches to explore and the west coast beaches are known for brilliant sunsets, making for a really memorable evening. Brancaster beach is superb for relaxing beach days with the family. Walk along the beach and seals can often be spotted bobbing in the inlet.

Much of this area is also an Area of Outstanding Beauty and many conservation areas teeming with birds and wildlife from RSPB Titchwell, Snettisham Nature Reserve and Holme NWT to name a few. Alternatively pop on your walking boots or bicycle as there are many routes, including the National Cycle Route, Peddars Way and Norfolk Coastal Path.

For something delicious to eat visit the Rose and Crown in Snettisham, a local gem which also boast the Norfolk Pub of the year award and just 3 miles away Thornham has some great delis and farm shops.

Guest reviews

We have had the most enjoyable stay at The Long Cottage. The accommodation is perfect for a large family group of mixed generations. The location is beautiful, quiet and ideal for reaching the Norfolk Coast, Sandringham and the City of Norwich. Loved the Rose and Crown at Harpley and the more vibrant Dabbling Duck. The food was excellent at both. Being so close to Sandringham and the Coast to visit Holme next to the Sea was perfect for what we wanted to do. Star gazing through the lovely skylights was a bonus. Spacious comfortable kitchen for the family gathering was perfect.

The Gidden's, 9th of January 2024

The Long Cottage is very spacious, well equipped, comfortable and thoughtfully furnished. We had just about everything we needed and found all the small things added to our comfort and enjoyment - e.g. children's games, extra blankets etc. There were even things for our dog! The location is easy for beaches, country walks and Sandringham. (Children's playground there is excellent.) Having such a large and well equipped kitchen, laid out in the way it was meant that the whole family could gather and chat whilst preparing meals - and could all eat comfortably together. Smart TVs - very much appreciated. The showers were brilliant, as was the hot water. There was a lovely fresh feel to the cottage - and a very homely, relaxed ambience with high quality, robust fittings and furniture. The gardens are private and lovely to be in. It was obviously very well looked after.

The Butler's, 7th of August 2023

It was the perfect venue for my 60th birthday! I was lucky enough to have my sister & hubby from Canada join us along with our son and his family. The 3 dogs enjoyed the garden!! I can't thank the owners enough for allowing us to bring all of our beasties!! To start with, just exploring the cottage was fun! Visiting Sandringham House and gardens was very special. Luckily we had brilliant weather so were able to enjoy the cottage and garden fully. Thank you for a lovely stay, we all truly enjoyed it!!

The Ridge's, 30th of June 2023

A wonderful cottage in a beautiful setting. Perfect for two families. The children loved running between the back and front gardens and the kitchen is a great central space for entertaining. All in all the perfect get-away!

Stayed at The Long Cottage this weekend with a big group of friends and had a fabulous time. Great kitchen for socialising and a big table to eat round. Went for lovely beach walks and slept well in the comfy beds. Even saw a shooting star which was a bonus!
