Skylark is a spacious detached house quietly located within a couple of minutes walk from the sea in the highly sought after coastal village of Burnham Overy Staithe. Its owners have used their years of experience renting holiday cottages to produce their own ultimate second home, tastefully furnishing it in a coastal contemporary style and thoughtfully equipping it. This is an ideal holiday home for families and friends with a sociable kitchen/dining area and a light and airy sitting room with glass doors opening into the large lawned garden, with plenty of parking at the front for cars and boats. The spacious downstairs bedroom and absence of steps on the ground floor, makes Skylark a suitable place to stay for less able guests.

It is only 2 minutes walk to the excellent local pub (The Hero) , the playing fields with childrens' playground and tennis courts and to the staithe. From the staithe you can either follow the footpath across the creeks out to the glorious sandy beach, or hop in a boat.

Harbour/Beach

A picturesque fishing and sailing harbour with multiple winding tidal creeks and salt marshes stretching from the harbour side and leading to sand dunes: the biggest known as Gun Hill. From Burnham Overy Staithe you can take a scenic walk to Gun Hill which takes about half an hour. In the summer there is lovely wildlife to be spotted including wading birds and beautiful butterflies. A gap in the dunes, locally known as Burnham Harbour, opens up and there are miles of golden sandy beaches stretching out towards Holkham and Wells to be admired. During the summer there is a ferry out to the nature reserve of Scolt Head Island which is a lovely trip for bird watchers and seal spotters.

Village

An area of outstanding natural beauty, the village is a large hamlet and a great destination for your stay. The views across the harbour are lovely whatever time of year you decide to visit. There is a great little gastro pub in the centre of the village called The Hero (in honour of Admiral Lord Nelson) which has a great menu of tasty dishes. Also, in the centre of the village there is a large playing field with hard tennis courts and basketball area and a children’s playground. Just outside the village is the noticeable landmark of the stunning six-storey Burnham Overy Windmill and neighbouring watermill, although neither are open to the public, they stand proud on the edge of the village, a beautiful sight when the sun catches the sails against Norfolk's big blue skies. In June Burnham Overy Staithe hosts the popular Norfolk Superhero Challenge, a quadraphonic event where teams of 2 work together to swim, kayak, cycle and run across the beaches and through the creeks. A lovely charity event to spectate. To pop to one of the other coastal villages you can catch the Coasthopper Bus which runs along the coast through many of the delightful villages and seaside towns - a great green way to explore the coast and without the worry of where to park!

History

Part of Burnham Overy was the original port for The Burnhams and set on the river Burn. Trading ships once reached the village by the river until the end of the Middle Ages when the river silted up and along with it the commercial trade. Until the end of the First World War the trading ships used the Staithe. This made a distinction between the two villages Burnham Overy Town and Burnham Overy Staithe that exist a mile apart from one another today. The most notable resident of Burnham Overy Staithe is Richard Woodget who resided at one of our cottages Flagstaff East/West and was the captain of the Cutty Sark. Horatio, Admiral Lord Nelson according to letters learned to row and sail a dinghy at Burnham Overy Staithe at the age of 10 just two years before joining the Navy.

Visit

A great central location on the north Norfolk Coast right on the coastal path ideal for popping on your walking books and walking for about 30 minutes to reach the glorious wide open beach. If you are looking for family days out there are the beaches of Wells and Brancaster where you can park nearby and reach the beaches within a few steps.

Guest reviews

Absolutely brilliant holiday staying in this property, as we've done so many times before. Really appreciated the cake, chocolate and crisps left for us and the milk in the fridge too, plus additional things like copies of Country Life magazine, good selection of DVDs and books and domestic additions, such as dishwasher tablets and tea towels etc. The property was very clean and had everything we required. The weather was perfect - sunny and warm, throughout our stay and it only rained at night. We fully enjoyed cycling well over 100 miles during our holiday and swimming in the sea every day too, with seals bobbing up nearby as we swam! The property was so comfortable and welcoming at the end of each day of vigorous cycling trips. The beds were comfortable and clean, as were the bathrooms and kitchen and there was lots of room to spread out in the living room in the evenings and relax. The garden is carefully designed so as not to be overlooked and it was very peaceful at night with only the hooting owls and the occasional cry of a seabird. All in all, another fantastic holiday here. Thank you!

The Morgan's, 2nd of September 2022

We enjoyed the space and the light particularly looking out on the back garden. We thought the garden was excellent with such a good range of seating areas. Radio and TV worked well!

The Piff's, 25th of June 2021

This is a great house for families. The weather was good so we could open the sliding doors into the garden which gives the house a delightful inside out feel. This is the 4th or 5th time we have stayed in this property and we hope to do so again. It works very well for a holiday property with the large garage for the bikes and beach equipment. The large garden is fun for croquet and swing ball and altogether it is very easy to use. Please say thank you to the owners.

The Marsh Family, 24th of July 2020

Our first stay at Skylark. We hope to visit again. More spacious than we expected liked its secluded but convenient position. Many thanks to the owners, the housekeepers and Sowerby's.

Four years now since our first stay at Skylark and its even better than we remembered. A very comfortable family home with all the amenities you need.
We’ve had another perfect holiday cycling to the beach and through the forest and around the Holkham Estate. Swimming in the sea, boating in the staithe and kiting in the dunes. The garage is particularly useful for storing bikes and sandy paraphernalia. Cant wait to come back!

Third time of staying at Skylark. All the family together. The Grandchildren loved the large garden. Great weather so we could spend a lot of time on the beach and go biking etc. We also enjoyed the inside/outside aspect of the house. We will be back next year!

A lovely house and fantastic garden. Everything is so homely and welcoming. The kitchen is so well equipped and the wood burner very efficient- lights and burns a treat.

The everhot is a pleasure to cook on and would consider one in the future.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay and watching the geese flying home.
Would recommend the HERO for dinner- it is what a pub should be.

The only thing we could not get to work was the heating.

Toby, Anna, Izzy, Tommy and Snoop, 19th of July 2013

Lovely light and airy holiday house with comfortable beds and almost everything we needed to make this a great family holiday. Highlights included hiring kayaks and exploring various inlets at the dawn high tide, watching egrets, avocets and spoonbills, hiking to Holkham, wild water swimming and spotting nesting birds and lizards in the dunes, kites, beach combing and crabbing and endless sunshine all week!

The Smiths, 5th of July 2013

A lovely house which had a warm and welcoming feel to it. The attention to detail and quality of everything was very much appreciated and made it feel a real home from home.

However would have liked a TV which was easier to operate or was it us! A socket to charge shavers would also have been helpful.

Neither of the above spoiled what has been a very pleasant but all to short stay.

andrew & sandra, 25th of June 2013

Three generations of the March family met up from all corners - London, Cornwall and Sheffield. Enjoyed the ease of the house and teh lovely front garden which was great for Elfie (2 1/2) to run around to her hearts delight. We did the usual Norfolk activities, beach, biking, walking, crabbing etc. A very cosy holiday home. Thanks a lot.
