Beach

With its big blue skies and sandy beach, Wells award-winning beach is a popular family destination about a mile from the quay. It's well known for its long stretch of sand, iconic row of beach huts, sand dunes and pine woods.

Village

It's a delightful unspoilt historic town on the North Norfolk Coast with a jumble of old buildings and lanes still existing from its heritage as a port and former maltings industry. The picturesque quay and waterfront is still very much a working port with fishing boats still berthed in this small harbour and stalls selling locally caught shrimps, crabs and whelks. A popular place with sailors with many sailing and leisure craft here and local sailing tuition available. A distinctive landmark on the quay is the granary building with its overhanging gantry. Children enjoy the facilities round the quay and the challenge of crabbing (gillying) from the steep harbour wall.

The main shopping area of Wells is Staithe Street, a narrow, mostly pedestrianised lane with surviving Victorian and Edwardian shop fronts, that runs from the water's edge right up to the top part of town. In the centre of the town is The Buttlands which is a large rectangular green lined with Georgian and late Victorian houses, which used to be used for archery practise in mediaeval days. Now it is home to the excellent Crown hotel and restaurant which is run by Kiwi celebrity chef Chris Coubrough, as well as the popular The Globe Inn.

The quay has become one of the North Norfolk’s most popular and well-loved seaside destinations with a great selection of shops, galleries and places to eat, including the award winning French's fish & chips.

History

The name derives from the spring water which rises up through the chalk area. Guella is the name given in the doomsday book and later derived from Wella meaning spring. The supply of corn and grain was the main trade for the town of Wells, its seaport dates back to the fourteenth century. Wells was also known for the supply of malt, the town boasted to have up to twelve maltings and in 1750 this equated to a third of the exports of malt from the country. Wells port widely relies on the tides to gain access to the harbour as there is not a river running through it. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries its mariners were the first to bring herring and cod in large quantities from Iceland.

Visit

Only a couple of miles away along the coast road is Holkham Hall with its impressive 18th century Palladian architecture and 3,000 acre deer park. This is a must visit location for all the family with many lovely events taking place at Holkham throughout the year. There is also a nature reserve in and around the Holkham which includes all manner of wildlife habitats, flora and fauna. You can visit the Lookout for panoramic views whilst enjoying a cuppa located at the top of Lady Anne’s Drive. The beach at Holkham is absolutely beautiful and has often been used as the location for many films and music videos including ‘Shakespeare in Love’ and ‘The Duchess’. You will often see families with their four-legged friend or even weekend horse riders, or if you are lucky the Household Cavalry at the beach.

We really enjoyed our stay in this well appointed apartment. As it was mid March we were very pleased that the apartment was warm and comfortable. Very quiet and easily accessible to all the local amenities. We were pleased with the parking space, we never used the car for the whole week due to the fantastic nearby bus service. Everything was great, we enjoyed the whole week! Thank you!

The Clay's, 26th of March 2024

We enjoyed our stay at Smugglers Cove very much. The property was very well equipped and had everything we needed. It is in a perfect position and very quiet, with parking at the door. An easy walk down to the quay for shops and cafes. The heating was very efficient, and because the weather was quite warm during our stay, we didn’t need to put it on very often. Altogether a lovely week. We have been to Wells many times, and usually enjoy a meal at the Crown in the Buttlands. Also enjoy trips to Blakeney, Burnham Overy Staithe and Brancaster.

Juliet, 19th of February 2024

Another enjoyable stay in this comfortable flat in a quiet part of town. We always visit Wells in the winter for birdwatching and were lucky to have fine weather, lots of sunshine and wonderful light. Enjoyed visits to Brancaster Staithe and Cley. The new bistro at Glandford is worth a visit.

The Dowley's, 5th of February 2024

Lovely apartment in a quiet location but with everything in Wells within easy reach. Great parking in the town is a real bonus! Clean, well equipped and warm (as the weather turned cold). Great place 😊 Lovely stay - thank you!

The Hart's, 30th of November 2023

We were able to have a good look around the North of Norfolk because of our situation. This was highly regarded by my colleague.

Mr Smith, 13th of November 2023

Another really lovely stay at the apartment. It is in a great location, quiet and yet close to all amenities. The advantage of trouble free parking is invaluable! The outside space and drying area is also a huge advantage.
We really enjoy staying at the property when visiting Wells. Comfy bed and pillows. Weather was perfect, which makes a difference. Wells an ideal location for exploring lots of different areas along the coast. Lots of lovely cafes and pubs to enjoy.

The Lait's, 18th of September 2023

once again we have enjoyed our stay, great location , modern property ,very quiet.

The Joys, 1st of September 2023

We have stayed here on several previous occasions and always enjoy our visits. The accommodation is pleasant, comfortable, warm and ideally located. It is also suitably quiet at night.I do not doubt that it will not be long before we return once again. Despite increasing years we were motivated to walk to Holkham and back on the beach. There was much rain forecast but we seemed able to find much fine, dry and sunny weather during our stay. I hope it will not be long before we return.

The Wilson's, 24th of August 2023

The Richmond's, 29th of March 2023

Literally last min booking, hours before arriving. Juliana was a star sorting this out for a sad visit. We have stayed at number 2 many many times and it is always a pleasure. As always allows us space and freedom to live without the constraints of being in a hotel room. It was perfect on this occasion for my Mum who is extremely unwell and making a last visit to her home and family 😔. As always. Perfect. Staying in number 3 in May so 🤞for just as good.

The Brown's, 1st of March 2023

The whole place is excellent, far better than Pinewoods!! I believe that 2 smugglers cove is the perfect holiday accommodation. It hasn’t really got a garden, the bit of shrubbery was neat and well kept though.
