Floorplan

Beach

With its big blue skies and sandy beach, Wells award-winning beach is a popular family destination about a mile from the quay. It's well known for its long stretch of sand, iconic row of beach huts, sand dunes and pine woods.

Village

It's a delightful unspoilt historic town on the North Norfolk Coast with a jumble of old buildings and lanes still existing from its heritage as a port and former maltings industry. The picturesque quay and waterfront is still very much a working port with fishing boats still berthed in this small harbour and stalls selling locally caught shrimps, crabs and whelks. A popular place with sailors with many sailing and leisure craft here and local sailing tuition available. A distinctive landmark on the quay is the granary building with its overhanging gantry. Children enjoy the facilities round the quay and the challenge of crabbing (gillying) from the steep harbour wall.

The main shopping area of Wells is Staithe Street, a narrow, mostly pedestrianised lane with surviving Victorian and Edwardian shop fronts, that runs from the water's edge right up to the top part of town. In the centre of the town is The Buttlands which is a large rectangular green lined with Georgian and late Victorian houses, which used to be used for archery practise in mediaeval days. Now it is home to the excellent Crown hotel and restaurant which is run by Kiwi celebrity chef Chris Coubrough, as well as the popular The Globe Inn.

The quay has become one of the North Norfolk’s most popular and well-loved seaside destinations with a great selection of shops, galleries and places to eat, including the award winning French's fish & chips.

History

The name derives from the spring water which rises up through the chalk area. Guella is the name given in the doomsday book and later derived from Wella meaning spring. The supply of corn and grain was the main trade for the town of Wells, its seaport dates back to the fourteenth century. Wells was also known for the supply of malt, the town boasted to have up to twelve maltings and in 1750 this equated to a third of the exports of malt from the country. Wells port widely relies on the tides to gain access to the harbour as there is not a river running through it. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries its mariners were the first to bring herring and cod in large quantities from Iceland.

Visit

Only a couple of miles away along the coast road is Holkham Hall with its impressive 18th century Palladian architecture and 3,000 acre deer park. This is a must visit location for all the family with many lovely events taking place at Holkham throughout the year. There is also a nature reserve in and around the Holkham which includes all manner of wildlife habitats, flora and fauna. You can visit the Lookout for panoramic views whilst enjoying a cuppa located at the top of Lady Anne’s Drive. The beach at Holkham is absolutely beautiful and has often been used as the location for many films and music videos including ‘Shakespeare in Love’ and ‘The Duchess’. You will often see families with their four-legged friend or even weekend horse riders, or if you are lucky the Household Cavalry at the beach.

Guest reviews

Pleasant comfortable well equipped accommodation in a pretty location. Walk on Wells Beach. Afternoon Tea at Morston Hall.

The constantinou 's, 20th of April 2024

Fabulously thoughtful to let us know the apartment was available early and provide fizz and snacks. Super quality accommodation in wonderful location we enjoyed our stay very much. We did buy a shower mat because we wanted an extra non-slip assurance when showering as there is no grab rail either. This comment is just in case it would help another guest. We thoroughly enjoyed our break. Thank you for consistently excellent experiences.

The Bechelet's, 26th of March 2024

A very enjoyable stay. So many lovely walks near by and Wells next the Sea is an interesting town . The apartment suited us completely. So clean and warm and everything you need for a weeks holiday. The beaches, the walks and the pubs and cafes. A pleasure to stay in this apartment and such good value.

The Willmott's, 29th of February 2024

Brilliant stylish classy apartment fully equipped fantastic location. Being in great location and the flat great place to hang out.

The Smith's, 8th of January 2024

Our 4th visit to Monteagle 5 and just as cosy and comfortable as its predecessors. We like its location overlooking The Buttlands, with a pair of director's chairs offering a grandstand view of life going on across the green. Staithe Street's just a hop, skip and a jump away; near enough to get you egg & bacon rolls back piping hot from Howells Bakery. This time the 'highlight' has to be a one-way ride on the Welcome Ferry out from Burnham Overy Staithe to Gun Hill, where a seal pop watched our arrival with mingled amusement and disdain.

The Pearson's, 6th of November 2023

It’s our third stay at 5 Monteagle. We love it. Fish and chips on the beach, fun times in our beach hut. The kids playing on the Buttlands.

The Thomas's, 14th of September 2023

We really enjoyed our stay at Monteagle. A beautiful airy and nicely decorated property. Spotlessly clean and in a really lovely prime location for all the beautiful sites of Wells. You do have to be prepared for some noise at night due to its close proximity to the most popular pubs on the village Green, but that didn’t put us off and we loved our stay.Wells itself is a beautiful, with lovely shops and a beautiful beach. We also walked to Stiffkey from Wells. It was a long walk but a lovely one taking in the views of the surrounding salt marshes. We are very lazy when it comes to nature watching, but still managed to see little egrets, oyster catches, and curlews without even trying which was really nice. We would definitely come back to wells and stay at 5 Monteagle again.

The Tamplin's, 1st of September 2023

Stylish apartment in a lovely old property in a beautiful area of Wells

the Harris's, 3rd of April 2023

Well equipped with quality furnishings. Handily placed with great views from the front windows. However no reserved parking and the being on the second floor the stairs might be a problem for some. We enjoyed sitting looking out over the Buttlands from the lounge window.

The Clydesdale family, 28th of October 2022

Comfortable third floor apartment with views across The Buttlands. We enjoyed walks at Holkham and Burnham Overy Staithe. Breakfast at Byfords in Holt. Cakes from Picnic Fayre at Cley. Fish & chips from Plattens on the quay at Wells. Our second stay in six weeks, which should be recommendation enough!

Jacqueline and James, 21st of October 2022

The directors chairs in the window were a brilliant vantage point to watch the Buttlands from. The decor was lovely. Sofas super comfy.

The Thomas's, 27th of August 2021

The Smiths', 31st of July 2020

A well equipped spotless cottage. Good view across the Green. Very well equipped.Nothing extra needed. I have never seen so many hangers in a rented property. Excellent The guest information was also excellent. The owner had added lots of helpful information and everything was to hand

Tublin, 20th of September 2019

This was our second visit. We like 5 Monteagle for it's position. The view over Buttlands. How well appointed it was for a small flat. Plus nice colour schemes. We had a perfect, relaxing holiday and reluctantly returned to, a busy working week.

The Lings', 6th of September 2019

10 out of 10 for cleanliness It was really clean and comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the apartment was excellent. It was clean and comfy and we felt at home. The extra goodies were a lovely touch. The apartment is in a perfect location too. We also liked that there wasn’t too much clutter in the apartment, this was particularly important for us as we have a very curious and lovely 18month old! We would definitely stay again and will recommend to our family and friends. Thanks again.
